Wellness and Preventative

Cats

Cats are often overlooked when it comes to vaccines due to their indoor lifestyle and solitary natures.  Whether your cat manages to sneak out only occasionally or is a determined explorer we can offer options to keep them healthy.  At your annual wellness exam your doctor will assess your cat's lifestyle and make recommendations tailored for their needs.

Rabies: This vaccine is required by law.  We offer either one year or three year options.  The three year vaccine can only be administered if the first rabies vaccine was a one year.

FVRCP: This is a yearly combination vaccine that combats three serious and highly contagious diseases: Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis or 'herpes virus' causes upper respiratory disease and conjunctivitis, Calicivirus which causes mild to severe respiratory infections and oral disease and Panleukopenia which is a severe infection that attacks the gastrointestinal, immune and nervous systems.

Leukemia: This yearly vaccine is highly recommended for any cats going outdoors.  It is transmitted through saliva or nasal secretions.  Grooming and fighting are the most common ways for the virus to spread.  It can lead to anemia or lymphoid cancers and suppress the immune system.

FeLV/FIV testing: We recommend this test for any new kitten or cat that is coming into your household.  Feline Leukemia (FeLV) causes anemia or lymphoid cancers.  Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is similar to human HIV and attacks and compromises the immune system.  Once a negative test result is obtained the Leukemia vaccine can be administered once a year.
