Wellness and Preventative

Dogs

In order to keep your pets healthy and happy we offer vaccines that can be tailored to your pet's needs.  Before vaccines are administered an annual exam is performed to ensure the pet is healthy enough to receive the vaccines.  Depending on their activity and lifestyle, for dogs we recommend the following vaccines:

Rabies: This vaccine is required by law.  We offer either one year or three year options.  The three year vaccine can only be administered if the first rabies vaccine was a one year.

DAPP: This combination vaccine provides immunity to four serious diseases: Distemper is a highly contagious virus that can cause respiratory, gastrointestinal and neurological illness.   Adenovirus (Hepatitis) is an often fatal virus.  Parvovirus is highly contagious, causes extreme vomiting and diarrhea and is often fatal.  Parainfluenza causes coughing and sneezing.  A one year or three year option is available although the three year vaccine does not contain parainfluenza.

Leptospirosis: Also known as 'Lepto', this bacteria is found in or near water contaminated by infected urine -  usually from wild animals.  Although prevalent in our area many infections go unnoticed and severe infections are often fatal.  After receiving the initial booster, this is a yearly vaccine.

Bordetella: Also known as 'kennel cough',  this bacteria is very contagious and causes coughing and sneezing. The vaccine is recommended for any dogs that come into contact with other dogs through boarding, grooming, daycare, dog parks and other socializing activities.  It is a yearly vaccine but some grooming and boarding facilities will requires a booster every six months.

Lyme: Lyme disease is transmitted through ticks causing fever and joint inflammation as well as long term joint and kidney problems.  We are seeing more cases of Lyme in our area but it is already very prevalent in Wisconsin and Minnesota.  After the initial booster this is a yearly vaccine.

Bivalent Flu: Also known as 'Canine Influenza', this is a highly contagious disease that causes a dry hacking cough, fever and discharge from the eyes and nose.  As with the human flu, there are occasional fatalities.  After the initial booster this is a yearly vaccine.

4DX Test: This annual test for dogs older than 12 months will check for four common diseases; Heartworm which is transmitted via mosquitoes and Lyme, Anaplasma and Ehrlichia which are all tick borne diseases.  We offer Heartworm preventatives (dosed monthly) to minimize any risk of infection; however, as no preventative is 100% effective, a yearly test is still recommended.
